Current playoff format sucks but not for the reason Marko is angry at.
Marko keep in mind under a 1-8 structure you'd be playing... the Pittsburgh Penguins in round 1.
Under a true 1-16 structure with no conferences (which I prefer) you'd be playing... the Pittsburgh Penguins in round 1.
Which is worse, Boston/Tampa or Pittsburgh in round 1? Both sound like you're underdogs.
There's no gimmes in the playoffs. Unless you're a division winner which the Leafs weren't. Finishing 3rd in your Division sounds about right for a hard first round matchup.

I don't hate who we're playing, I hate that it's not giving a fair shot to the better teams. It should be 1-8, etc, and we should be playing the Pens, whether I like it or not. This divisional format is ridiculous. Why is Boston at 112 pts, second in the conference, playing Toronto, at #4? They should be playing Columbus, who is #7. Instead, Washington plays Columbus, and Pittsburgh, at #5 all of a sudden gets the advantage of playing #6 Philly? Finishing 3rd in your div and 4th in the conference should still be rewarded with home ice advantage, not Pittsburgh at #5. And if it's supposed to be more dependent on your division, why are both WC from the same division? Either follow-up with a strictly divisional format or be a normal format. Shouldn't be trying to have it both ways.
The work in the season should be rewarded in playoff seeding. I enjoy the east-west aspect, but a league-wide 1-16, like you mentioned, would be awesome too - as long as divisions and division winners are removed from the equation.
I don't know why I'm so worked up by it, but fuck it's a silly system.

Yo little late, or maybe not, but how about them Senators. I can't say I have ever seen more of a dumpster fire in sports during my lifetime. Holy shit.
